How Pick & Drop Kept Nepal Moving During the Covid-19 Lockdown

Blog Intro

When the Covid-19 lockdown disrupted essential supplies in 2020, Pick & Drop stepped up to deliver gas and essentials. Today, we’re a trusted B2B logistics partner for 400+ clients across Nepal.

A Pandemic-Era Beginning

In April 2020, three young entrepreneurs—Sishir Khanal, Ghanshyam Khanal, and Nabin Parajuli—founded Pick & Drop with a vision to provide reliable delivery services for e-commerce businesses.

However, when Nepal went under a nationwide stay-home order in March 2020 to control the spread of Covid-19, households in Kathmandu Valley faced severe disruptions in essential supplies, especially cooking gas.

To respond to this crisis, Pick & Drop quickly pivoted to deliver gas cylinders door-to-door, helping families keep their kitchens running. For nearly a year, our delivery associates worked tirelessly to ensure no household was left in need.

“Our discussions with e-commerce entrepreneurs before launching Pick & Drop only confirmed the need for a reliable logistics and delivery service,” recalls co-founder Nabin Parajuli.

The Faces Behind Pick & Drop

The co-founders bring diverse experience and a shared passion for solving logistical challenges:
- Sishir Khanal – Co-founder of Teach for Nepal, a social enterprise improving public school education, and now a Member of Parliament from Kathmandu-6.
- Ghanshyam Khanal – A computer science and information technology graduate with a keen eye for building scalable services.
- Nabin Parajuli – A computer engineer who previously founded a platform for selling tech-related products in 2014.

From Pandemic Service to Growth

After Covid restrictions were relaxed, Pick & Drop returned to its core objective—a third-party B2B logistics and delivery service provider.

Today, we serve 400+ clients, including leading e-commerce platforms like Daraz, SastoDeal, and Gyapu, and receive calls from around 60 clients daily.

Our dedication and innovative services earned us a spot among the top five start-ups in the ICT Awards 2023, held in Kathmandu.

Building From the Ground Up

Pick & Drop began with an initial investment of Rs 3.5 million, raised from family and friends. Today, our total investment has grown beyond Rs 25 million, with plans to raise more funds to expand our services and reach.

Our Delivery Heroes

Pick & Drop operates with 22 delivery associates in Kathmandu Valley and another 10 associates in major cities across Nepal. In rural and remote areas, we collaborate with local individuals or partner courier companies to ensure coverage.

What We Offer Our Associates

  • Fuel, maintenance, and communication costs covered by the company.
  • Insurance coverage for every delivery associate.
  • Competitive salaries starting at Rs 18,000 per month with performance-based incentives.

Mandip Nepal, a delivery associate from Jhapa, shares:

“I earn around Rs 22,000 per month, excluding incentives. Bonuses for making over 15 deliveries a day help increase my income.”

Associates can earn between Rs 18,000 and Rs 30,000 per month with incentives.

Services We Offer

Pick & Drop provides a wide range of logistics solutions:
- Reliable package delivery across Nepal.
- Payment collection and next-day settlement for e-commerce businesses.
- Custom packaging services tailored to client needs.

Our Pricing

  • Within Kathmandu Valley: Rs 110 (including VAT) for up to 1 kg, plus Rs 20 for each additional kg.
  • Outside the Valley: Rs 120 for 500 gm, Rs 150 for up to 1 kg, with bulk rates for large clients.

Challenges We Face

The logistics sector in Nepal is full of opportunities but also challenges:
- Unclear addressing systems make deliveries complicated and time-consuming.
- Lack of package insurance discourages the long-distance transport of expensive goods.
- Shortage of skilled technical staff to manage delivery tracking, status updates, and reporting systems.

“The government must go beyond policy promises and actively support start-ups and e-commerce businesses,” says Parajuli.

Looking Ahead

From delivering cooking gas during the pandemic to becoming one of Nepal’s top B2B logistics companies, Pick & Drop has grown into a symbol of resilience and innovation.

With 400+ clients, a strong nationwide network, and an ever-expanding team, we are committed to building the future of logistics in Nepal—one reliable delivery at a time.
